Chapter 30: Montgomery G.I. Bill (Active Duty)

Designed to provide up to 36 months of education benefits for eligible veterans. In order to qualify, you must be on active duty or have been for at least two years and have had your military pay reduced by $100 a month for 12 months of active duty and received a discharge specified as "HONOROABLE" are eligible. This benefit can be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, and correspondence courses and on-the job training. Benefits are payable for 10 years following discharge from active duty.

Chapter 31: Veterans Vocational Rehabilitation Program

A veteran of W.W. II or thereafter who has a service connected disability which entitles him/her to VA disability compensation and who is in need of vocational rehabilitation because the disability creates an employment handicap. Vocational Rehabilitation may be provided for up to 48 months. An eligible veteran now generally has 12 years from the date he or she is notified of entitlement to VA compensation in which to use these benefits. Chapter 1606: Montgomery G.I. Bill (Selected Reserve)

The Selected Reserve includes the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard.

Eligibility for this program is determined by the Selected Reserve components. VA makes the payments for this program. You may be entitled to receive up to 36 months of education benefits. Your benefit entitlement ends 10 years from the date of your eligibility for the program, or on the day you leave the Selected Reserve.

Chapter 35: Dependents Educational Assistance (DEA)

Educational assistance allowance paid to qualifying spouses, surviving spouses and children of certain veterans who died while on active duty or who are totally disabled due to their military service. This program provides up to 45 months of education benefits to eligible survivors and dependents of veterans. According to the AACROA Manuel for Veterans Certifying Officials, basic eligibility for Chapter 35 education benefits may be established for the following categories of students:

Sons, daughters, spouses and surviving spouses of veterans who died or are permanently disabled as the result of a service-connected disability arising out of active service in the Armed Forces, or who died from any cause while such disability was in existence.

A child (between ages 18 and 26 with some exceptions) of a veteran who is permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition; or who died in service; or who died of a service-connected disability; or who died while evaluated as having total and permanent service-connected disability; or who is listed as a POW or MIA.

California College Fee Waiver

The California College Fee Waiver program for veterans' dependents allows the waiver of all "state mandated" fees but not campus-based fees at State of California Community College, Campus of the University of California, and Campus of the California State University system. You must qualify under one of the following plans to receive this benefit:

  • PLAN A --- Be the spouse, child or unmarried surviving spouse of a veteran who is totally service-connected disabled, or died of service-related causes.
  • PLAN B --- Be the child of a veteran who has a service-connected disability, or had a service-connected disability at the time of death, or who died of service-related causes.
  • PLAN C --- Any dependent, or surviving spouse who has not remarried, or any member of the California National Guard, who in the line of duty, was killed, died of a disability resulting from an event that occurred, or is permanently disabled as a result of an event that occurred while in the active service of the state.

How does it work?

Apply for fee waiver eligibility at any County Veteran Services Office throughout the state. You may download the application form (DVS40) . Applicants to the program must submit proof of income, such as a tax return from the previous year, with your application. Certain dependency documents may also have to be provided in order to establish relationship to the veteran. When the form is completed, contact your nearest County Veterans Service Office (List of County Veterans Service Office address and phone numbers). After the county has established eligibility, they should create and mail a letter of eligibility to the Office of Veterans' Affairs at California State University, Long Beach. We will notify other campus offices as necessary.

When does it work?

The application must be processed before or during the Academic Year (A/Y) in which the student seeks eligibility. The benefit is applicable to one academic year only and must be renewed each academic year. The A/Y at CSU, Long Bach begins with the fall semester and continues through the spring semester.

Which fees are not waived?

Students are responsible for the campus fees, course fees, and all other costs of their education. Any per-unit fee charged by the University College Extension Services for enrollment and non-resident tuition are not waived. You are required to pay your registration fees in full in order to register for classes. Therefore, if your eligibility for this benefit is pending, you will need to pay your registration fees. You will receive a refund for the state fee once your eligibility letter is received by the Veterans Affairs Office at CSU, Long Beach.
